Sonim XP3plus now in Canada on Telus and Bell

US rugged device manufacturer Sonim has announced that its recently upgraded XP3 flip phone, the XP3plus, is now available in Canada on two major networks.

In a press release announcing an agreement with Telus, John Graff, Sonim’s chief operating officer says, “TELUS has been a great partner for Sonim rugged devices in Canada. We are excited to see the new XP3plus now available through TELUS, especially given the popular demand we’ve seen for our rugged flip phones. The XP3plus is an affordable, ultra-rugged option for any worker in need of simple and immediate voice communication.”

Although it is not mentioned in the press release, the XP3plus is also available from Bell.

As described in the press release, the XP3plus has “a larger display, additional programmable buttons to improve productivity, a new intuitive user interface with dynamic soft keys [and] a larger battery.” It also has “large, tactile and glove-friendly” Emergency/SOS and OneTouch Push-to-Talk (PTT) buttons (above) and “12 benchmarks of endurance and durability that exceed military durability standards (MIL-STD-810H),” including being:
• waterproof (being able to be submerged in 1.5 meters of water for 30 minutes); and
• drop proof (able to withstand drops from 1.5 meters onto concrete).

In addition, the XP3Plus has an 8MP camera (up from 5MP on the original XP3), a 100dB+ audio speaker with noise-cancellation, a 3-year comprehensive warranty, and is compatible with a range of industrial-grade accessories including headsets, remote speaker microphones and vehicle mounts.

The XP3plus runs off a modified version of Android 11, has a Qualcomm SM6115 Quad cores 2.0GHz chipset and comes with the following memory/storage features:
• 2GB RAM/16GB ROM (twice the RAM and ROM of the original XP3)
• 10GB available user memory (up from 4GB on the XP3)
• Supports up to 256GB MicroSD external memory (up from 128GB on the XP3)

The capacity of the Li-Ion batter is 2300mAh, compared with 1500mAh for the XP3.

I will be posting a review of the XP3plus soon. More information on the device can be found on Sonim’s website here.
